FALL INTO CREVASSE, HYPOTHERMIA

Washington, Mt. Baker

On September 22, four men from British Columbia were climbing Mt. Baker when two of them fell into a crevasse. The primary victim, Dennis Wheatley (50), fell while jumping across a crevasse opening and, in the process, pulled his partner in with him— a fall of about 40 feet. Wheatley had back injuries and soon felt the effects of the cold, as he was wearing shorts.

The other two in the party went for help. Wheatley was helicoptered to the hospital by 8:30 p.m. (Source: Ron Peterson, SAR Report)
