FALL ON ICE, NO EXPERIENCE

New Jersey, Delaware Water Gap, Mt. Tammany

On February 5, Karl Martinelli (19) and two friends hiked to the summit of Mt. Tammany by an established trail. The three, deciding to take a short cut, attempted to descend the steep East Bowl. This 1,000-foot face is checkered with talus, cliffs and, in the winter, ice flows. None of the three had any experience or equipment. Martinelli slipped on ice and tumbled 60 feet off a cliff. He later died of head injuries.
