James Forsyth (25) and three companions were returning from a successful climb of the Exum Ridge on the Grand Teton on August 23. They were descending the snow between the lower saddle and the Middle Teton Glacier about 8 p.m. when Forsyth fell and was unable to stop himself. During the slide of 300 or 400 feet, the victim fractured his right fibula.

At 8:20 a.m. on August 24, Rangers Jackson and Irvine were transported to the scene in an Alouette 3 helicopter which had been requested from Yellowstone National Park. A subsequent flight returned the rangers and the victim to Lupine Meadows at 9:20 a.m. Forsyth was then driven to St. John’s Hospital by Ranger Irvine. (Source: Dick Irvine, Grand Teton National Park)
