Wyoming, Grand Teton National Park, Storm. Point. On 21 July, Randy Charter (25) and David Dornan (29) were climbing on Storm Point. Carter was leading what looked like a moderately difficult pitch on the south face. He started to layback up a very large flake that broke off. It fell directly onto his left foot. He fell about 40 feet. Dornan was hit on the head by some rocks while holding the fall, but was uninjured, other than being dazed momentarily.

Source: Bob Irvine, Park Ranger, Grand Teton National Park.

Analysis: Carter had very little experience on rock of this nature. Had he been more experienced he would have tested the rock before attempting the layback.
