Utah, Salt Lake City

Publication Year: 1950.

Utah: Salt Lake City. (Although not a mountaineering accidebt, this is reported because of its tragic lesson.) On a graduation picnic, in the late spring of 1949, Glen Daw (17) fell to his death from a cliff on Storm Mountain, in Big Cottonwood Canyon. Persons at the scene said Daw and Maurine Woodward (17) had climbed the mountain to watch a ball game in progress below. When they started to leave the ledge upon which they were sitting, Daw slipped and fell into a clump of trees 300 feet below.

Analysis. This poignantly illustrates how absolutely inexperienced persons court disaster when they climb unroped and alone around steep cliffs.
