Morro Von Rosen (5,450m), Guanuqueando

South America, Argentina, Northern Andes, Puna de Atacama
Author: Marcelo Scanu, Argentina. Climb Year: 2011. Publication Year: 2012.

Martin Altamirano and Martin Castillo visited the Chani Group in northern Salta during March 2010. They first climbed several short rock routes and an icefall, then on the 27th put up a new rock route on Morro Von Rosen, which they named Guanuqueando. The route began at 4,700m and finished at 5,400m, after 14 pitches up to 6a. The ascent took six hours and involved sections of vertical rock.

The Chani Group (highest summit General Belgrano, 5,949m) is the only region of relatively compact granite in northern Argentina. The Pou brothers, from Spain, climbed new routes here in 2009 (AAJ 2010).
