Asia, Nepal, Thulagi (7,059m), Attempt

Thulagi (7,059m), attempt. Nine Japanese led by the well-known Himalayan explorer, Tamotsu Ohnishi, made the first known attempt on Thulagi, a southwestern outlier of Manaslu (8,163m) that was opened for climbing by the Nepalese government in 2003. The team approached via the Marsyandi and Dudh Khola toward the Larkya La, as far as the entrance to the Khasontu Khola, where they established base camp at 3,280m. The Japanese tried a mixed rib up the center of the steep icy wall on the northwest face of Thulagi, but gave up at 6,250m on May 3 due to difficulties and frequent avalanches emanating from the edge of the plateau just above their high point.
