Peak 6,100m, attempt. A 16-member Japanese team, with Sherpa support, visited the mountains north of the Annapurna Range during the summer season. Susumu Akihata and Yuichiro Ishi- hara were joint leaders. The expeditions goal was an unnamed and unclimbed summit of 6,100m in the Purkung Himal, which lies immediately northeast of the Thorong La on the popular Annapurna Circuit. They bought a permit for 6,482m Yakawa Kang, the peak immediately north of the Thorang La, which has no officially recorded ascent, only being opened for climbing in 2003. On August 18 six Japanese and four Sherpas reached 5,790m on Peak 6,100m before giving up in deep snow.
