Orvin Fjella Mountains: “Windmill Spire,” first ascent, by Frozen Tears; Unnamed Peak, first ascent, by Dragon Back Ridge. In November and December, Mike Libecki spent five weeks alone in a region of granite spires that forms part of the Orvin Fjella Mountains. He first attempted a buttress on an unnamed peak but backed off after four pitches because of serious rockfall. Libecki then spent 12 days climbing a fine tower he named “Windmill Spire.” He graded his 450m, nine-pitch route, Frozen Tears, VI 5.10 A3. He then returned to the peak he originally attempted and climbed a long ridge, Dragon Back Ridge (5.5), with 750m of elevation gain to the summit. A full account of this committing expedition appears earlier in the Journal.
