Australasia, New Zealand, Queenstown Region Summary

Publication Year: 2005.

Queenstown region summary. The Remarkable Range continues to be a ice playground in winter with several new lines being establised this year. Most notable is Helicampers (M-something) by Mark Sedon and Lionel Clay at well-known ice crag Wye Creek. Mark aided and bolted the severely overhanging line and Lionel bagged the first M-rated “free” ascent, first shot. The route climbs a schist cave wall and links to a thin free-hanging icicle. This is the first true mixed line in New Zealand employing pre-placed bolts for protection and is no doubt a reflection of overseas trends, whilst being a staunch reminder as to how far behind New Zealand is in the development of sport mixed-climbing.
