Deaths in 2002. Japanese Saito Kenji died from AMS on Spantik while returning after scaling the 7,027m peak. He was brought down to camp III in critical condition but soon died. Captain Mohammad Iqbal, member of Pak-China K2 Expedition had a fatal fall when a fixed rope broke during the descent from camp II at about 6,000m on July 22. He was loved and respected by fellow climbers as a gentleman. Twice he abandoned his summit bids to bring down sick climbers. High altitude porter Sher Rehman died in an avalanche on K2 near camp II. He was with the Spanish K2 Expedition led by Senator Luis Fraga. The noted Hungarian rock climber and mountaineer, Attila Ozsváth, disappeared in the Charakusa region of Hushe on July 24. He had gone to the area with a partner, Peter Tibor, although they do not appear to have been climbing together at the time. According to a spokesperson from North Pakistan Treks and Tours, who believe Ozsváth was swept away by an avalanche, a search was conducted but no trace was found.
