El Gigante, Logical Progression. Over a seven-and-a-half-week period in spring Peter Baumeister (Germany), Luke Laeser (U.S.), and Bert van Lint (Belgium) established an entirely bolt-protected 28-pitch route on El Gigante's northwest face. All of the moves were climbed free, but not every pitch was redpointed. The route, Logical Progression (800m, VI 5.12c A0), has become highly controversial because it was rappel-bolted as a sport climb on a big wall. An article on the climb and a sampling of the ensuing discussion are found in the El Gigante package earlier in this Journal.
