A.A.C., Sierra Nevada Section

Publication Year: 2002.

AAC, Sierra Nevada Section. The work of Chairman Steve Schneider, Jane Koski, Tadeusz Gladczenko, Tony Watkin, Paul Romero, and others was reflected in the fact that our section grew to over 900 members by year’s end. A brief wrap-up of the year’s activities: Traditional Sierra Nevada Ski Weekend, March 24-25; section meeting at Steve Schneider’s house, April 11; Owens River Gorge outing April 21-22 near Bishop; Lovers Leap climbing trip July 27-29; Goran Kropp slide show July 11 in San Francisco.

During April through October, new programs were launched in Yosemite: Yosemite Climbers Interpretation program, Camp 4 Coffee Conferences, and Camp 4 Fireside Chats.

George Gluck and his amazing Volunteers in Parks crews finished the new Wilderness Center in Tuolumne Meadows in September. This building is a testament to the dedication and strength of climbers willing to make a positive difference in Yosemite.

Section members Tom Frost, Dick Duane, George Gluck, and Linda McMillan are working to establish a Yosemite Climbers Ranch and Campground on U.S. Forest Service land adjacent to Yosemite National Park. Our preferred site would be about 20 minutes from Yosemite Valley. We are convinced that such a campground would easily serve the missions of the USFS, NPS, and AAC. A formal proposal is now being developed by the Yosemite Committee for discussion with the local Forest Service administrators.
