Argentine Patagonia

Chalten Massif

Torre Egger and Fitz Roy, Tonta Suerte. Tim O’Neill and Nathan Martin made an alpine-style ascent of the 3,300-foot Torre Egger via a combination of routes (VI 5.10 A2 WI6) in 59 hours from the glacier. They then established a new route on Fitz Roy’s massive 5,500-foot west face, Tonta Suerte (Dumb Luck, VI 5.10 Al), in a 57.5-hour round- trip push. They are the only the sixth and seventh climbers to summit Cerro Torre, Torre Egger, and Cerro Standhardt. A full account of their Patagonia adventures appears earlier in this Journal.
