Cerro Torre, Attempt. During the good-weather period in early January, Toni Ponholzer and a man named Franz (Austria) climbed to within four pitches of the northwest shoulder via a line Ponholzer had attempted previously on the east, northwest and north faces of Cerro Torre with Tommy Bonapace and Gerold Dünser. With no fixed ropes, they started from the base at first light and arrived at the Col of Conquest at 3 p.m. the same day. Theirs is the highest point anyone has ever been able to reach via the claimed Maestri-Egger line. They reported very difficult climbing in the upper portion of the route. This was the finest bit of climbing done in the area this season.
