General Sherman, East Face. On May 31, Billie Butterfield, Dave LeBlanc, Juan Esteban Lira, Natala Goodman and I climbed an outrigger summit of Sherman Peak at the south edge of the Pasayten Wilderness. General Sherman (7,640') lies due east of Sherman’s true summit (8,204') and faces the impressive east wall of Isabella Ridge. The ascent was made via the east slope and face starting at a gravel pit on the Eightmile Creek road, one mile south of the Copper Glance trail head. From the gravel pit, we went due west up through wildflowers, very light understory, and many game trails. At 6,200 feet, we broke out of the forest into light larch and snow. We followed a nice connecting set of steep snow gullies to a 7,580-foot notch just south of the summit at 7,640 feet. From this notch a short scramble (Class 3) took us to the top. We found a cairn on top but no information on who preceeded us to this interesting summit. Five hours up and three down. Recommended for early season.
