Broad Peak, Attempts and Tragedy. A number of climbers were reported to have reached Broad Peak’s foresummit this year, including Anatoli Boukreev, in 36 hours return from base camp, Ed Viesturs, Vekka Gustafsson (Finland), and an unspecified number of Japanese climbers. One of the Japanese groups on the mountain experienced tragedy when Jeffrey Bubb (U.S.) and Fukuzo Yokotagawa (Japan) were struck by an avalanche and killed while descending from CIII (6900m) to CII (6400m).
