Peak Shear, First Ascent, Mt. Tyree, Northeast Couloir, and Mt. Vinson, Tragedy. The French High Mountaineering Military Group (GMHM) was in Antarctica this season. It established several new routes from a base camp on the Patton Glacier. P. De Choudens and B. Virelaude made the first ascent of Pic Shear (4050m) (D, 1500m). De Choudens and J.M. Gryska made the first ascent of the 2300-meter northeast couloir on Mt. Tyree (4852 m). J.M. Gryska and B. Virelaude took a spectacular fall on Mt. Vinson; Gryska died. A. De Choudens (27) succeeded this year on the north ridge of Everest without oxygen as well.
