South America, Peru, Cordillera Central, Cerro Yana de Colac, Cerro Ventanilla and Cerro Yana Pucara, First Ascents

Cerro Yana de Colac, Cerro Ventanilla and Cerro Yana Pucara, First Ascents. In 1997,I visited the two more accessible districts of the Cordillera Central, located inland from Lima. I first traveled to the Cordillera de la Viuda. After traversing four high passes while vainly searching for some elusive ice peaks shown on the official maps, I made the first ascent of Cerro Yana de Colac (5028m, easy rock) on May 30. It is located eight kilometers west of the village of Shanglar. A week later, I visited the second district, Cordillera de Cascacocha. On June 10 and 12 respectively I made the first ascents of Cerro Ventanilla and Cerro Yana Pucara, both 5000 meters high and both located at the head of the Ventanilla stream. After a failed attempt on the rocky tower of Cerro Ajutanca (5050m), I returned to Lima.
