North America, Canada, Nunavut, Baffin Island, Great Cross Pillar, Tunuk

Great Cross Pillar, Tunuk. It was reported that Lou Bartell and Russ Mitrovich climbed a new line on Great Cross Pillar left of Crossfire (Synnott/Hollinger/Gore, 1995). The pair fixed lines for four days over a week of storm, then committed to the wall. Over 14 days they climbed 20 pitches on the route, enjoying substantial free climbing in the unusually warm weather, including a 600-foot El Cap Tower-like formation with splitter 5.11 hand and finger cracks and a full pitch of offwidth. The route, which they named Tunuk, also sported 1,000 feet of “sick” aid. (Rock and Ice 81)
