South America, Argentina, Argentine Patagonia, Cerro Fitz Roy, Various Ascents

Publication Year: 1997.

Cerro Fitz Roy, Various Ascents. Italians Michele Guerrini and Diego Stefani climbed the Goretta Pillar via the Cassarotto route with the Kearney variation on November 15, 1995. It is unclear whether they merely reached the top of the pillar or continued on to the summit.

Very few ascents were done in the ‘96-’97 season. The first one, on December 2-3 by French Pierre Mahenc and J.P Tremblai, climbed the 2000-meter Supercouloir. The only two ascents of the regular Franco-Argentinian Route were done by two Russians teams who, using siege tactics, managed to succeed despite the bad weather while everyone else was sitting in base camp. The first team summited on February 1, 1997, after spending 12 days on the wall; the second, on February 18.
