North America, United States, California, Sierra National Forest, Black Rock Dome, Bad Day at Black Rock

Sierra National Forest, Black Rock Dome, Bad Day At Black Rock. Black Rock Dome is a 600-foot south-facing formation just northwest of (and easily visible from) the road to Black Rock Reservoir. In August, Jim Zellers, Pete Taylor and I approached from the northwest via a dirt road and gnarly bushwhacking along the base. We climbed four pitches up the longest (central) portion of the dome. A great knob and bolted face pitch led to nice cracks followed by more face climbing (easy but runout) next to a large chimney to the top. Bad Day At Black Rock (III 5.10+) appeared to be the first route on the dome.
