South America, Argentine and Chilean Patagonia, Torres del Paine, Various Ascents

Publication Year: 1996.

Torres del Paine, Various Ascents. Eli Helmuth and I visited the Paine Towers area from January to February 20. After setting up basecamp on the Japanese Camp, we took advantage of some good weather and ascended the Via Monzino on the North Tower. Later, after one unsuccessful attempt, we went on to climb the Bonington-Whillans route on Torre Central, on which we encountered some excellent climbing. After collecting a few more ropes, we established a new all-free route on the west face of Torre Norte. We named the line Taller del Sol (5.10+, 13 pitches). We fixed ropes over a period of four days, and summitted on February 17. The route features excellent rock and a nice variety of crack climbing. All belays are fixed.
