Ascents on Great Cross Pillar, The Turret, and an Attempt On Polar Sun Spire. Mark Synnott, Warren Hollinger and Jerry Gore spent from May 13 until the end of June in Sam Ford Fjord, accomplishing a first ascent of The Great Cross Pillar (5500 feet) via the prow of the south face. Crossfire (VI 5.10 A4) was done in 19 pitches with 60-meter ropes; the summit was reached on June 3. Nuvualik (VI 5.10+ A3), a new route on the west face of the Turret (2000 feet), was done in 15 pitches with 60-meter ropes; the summit was reached on June 22. A line was also attempted on Polar Sun Spire. An account of the team's activity in Sam Ford Fjord appears earlier in this journal. (See photo on page 200.)
