Ascents in the Ulu area. On June 28, Adam Kolff and his father Kees were landed by Kurt Gloyer of Gulf Air Taxi, Yakutat, on a 6,100-foot pass in the small isolated mountain sub-range 15 miles southeast of Mount Kennedy, Kluane National Park. Two peaks of the range were climbed, including the highest which is unnamed and about 8,080 feet (60° snowfield on the west face to south ridge, then a pitch of class four blocky granite to summit horn). From there a great view of neighbor Ulu Mountain prompted a three-day summit attempt of the mostly snow and ice East Ridge of this beautiful 10,000-plus-foot peak. The attempt was aborted due to terrible rock on the East Ridge, gendarmes and increasing rain. We left Kluane on July 3 to join a larger group near Mount Vern Ritchie.
