Harvard Mountaineering Club. The H.M.C. celebrated its 70th anniversary in 1994, which was an eventful year for the club. The recent trend of increasing campus interest in climbing has continued and was reflected in the swelling roles of membership. During the school year, members lead introductory climbing trips for beginners, and the club serves as a meeting place for climbers on campus.

Summer is usually an active time for climbing, and 1994 was no exception. In addition to hitting the local crags, the Shawangunks and the White Mountains, climbers were to be found in Alaska, the Cascades, Wyoming and Yosemite in the western U.S., and in Scotland and the Alps in Europe.

The club’s winter/spring lecture was presented by Jeff Lowe in February. His talk, titled “Every Climber Has A Vision,” was a look back on a career marked by accomplishment, In December, Charlie Townsend presented the fall/winter lecture. Charlie discussed his climbs in the Alaska Range, including his first ascent of the east face of Mount Russell and the second ascent of Mount Foraker’s Talkeetna Ridge.

As a service to the New England ice-climbing community, the club continues to operate the Harvard Cabin below Huntington Ravine on Mount Washington. In 1994 arrangements were completed with the U.S. Forest Service which will keep the Cabin in operation for many years to come. Thanks to Jim Dowd and Chad Lewis for caretaking the Cabin during the 1993-94 winter season, and we welcome Chad back for the 1994-95 season.

In June the latest edition of our journal, Harvard Mountaineering No. 24, was published, with 160 pages of articles and photographs by club members. In commemoration of the Club’s 70th anniversary, there is a historical section in the journal which includes a retrospective on the 1946 H.M.C. expedition to Mount St. Elias, an account of exploration of British Columbia in the 1940s, and a look back on the construction of the Harvard Cabin. Copies of the journal are available from the club for $10.00 each including postage; checks may be made out to the Harvard Mountaineering Club.
