Santa Rosa, Jachacuno Collo, Jacha Cuapirota, Yaypuri, P 5540, Cordillera Quimsa Cruz. Thomas Miyagawa and I climbed three peaks in the Campanani group from Base Camp at the Chojña Khota mine. After a steep, icy ascent of the southwest face to the rocky summit of Santa Rosa (5590 meters, 18,340 feet) on August 24, we climbed the south face of Jachacuno Collo (Cerro Don Luis), the highest peak in the cordillera at 5800 meters (19,029 feet), on the 25th. On August 26, we set up a high camp on the west side of the Campanani Glacier at 5280 meters and on the 27th ascended the southwest face of Jacha Cuapirota (5700 meters, 18,701 feet). Moving further north in the cordillera, we ascended Yaypuri (5570 meters, 18,275 feet) by the southwest face on August 30. Then on September 1, I skirted on very poor ice the southwest face of P 5540 (18,176 feet), the peak just east of Yaypuri, wandered through the deep crevasses on the southern end of the peak to ascend it by the southeast ridge. I believe that this is the peak called “Nevado de las Vírgenes” or “Atorama Chuma.”
