Tower Butte. On October 23, Jason Keith and I made what we believe was the first ascent of Tower Butte. We rented a boat at Wahweap Marina near the Glen Canyon Dam on Lake Powell and went uplake to a campsite a short way up Labyrinth Canyon. We hiked south through dry washes to the west side. The route began from the highest talus on the western side. (IV, 5.9+, A3-, 8 pitches.) Unfortunately, we were not the first to visit the summit. Litterbugs in a helicopter had previously been there as evidenced by empty whiskey bottles, film containers, used flashlight batteries, helicopter landing gear skid marks and a small wooden scaffold, which we burned to keep warm on our unplanned bivouac. How disillusioning!
