Torre Central del Paine Rescue, 1992. Around the middle of November, 1992, Spaniards Xavier Metal and Joan Jover were nearly at the top of the difficulties on the 1963 Whillans-Bonington route near the summit of the Central Paine Tower when Metal’s aid anchor pulled out. He fell 15 meters, breaking his ankle, severely bruising his hip and lacerating a finger. They had to descend 1300 meters. Jover lowered him to the col and part way down the couloir, where Italian Bruno De Donà came upon them and also helped. The other Italians were called on and Metal was lowered to a point where a helicopter could evacuate him.
