Memphis Mountaineers, Inc. The Memphis Mountaineers had a productive year despite what seems to be a slow but steady reduction of available climbing spots. The 1992 membership consists of 63 members not only in Memphis, Tennessee, but throughout the United States.

In addition to the many rock-climbing trips to the local crags of the Mid-South, individual members were active afield in areas such as Oklahoma (Quartz Mountain), Texas (Enchanted Rocks), New York (Shawangunks), Nevada (Lake Tahoe area), and New England for rock-and-ice climbing. The Memphis Mountaineers were represented internationally in the Swiss Alps (Matterhorn, Breithorn, and Pollux), and France (Mont Blanc). The club assisted Memphis State University in training student park rangers in climbing and rescue techniques. A group of Eagle Scouts from the greater Memphis area were also given a course in basic-rock-climbing skills.

The Memphis Mountaineers continue to feel the constriction of access denial, as previously mentioned. We have been working to regain access to Tishomingo State Park in Mississippi. A permit system approved for use by the park has been delayed until the passage of new state legislation on “sovereign immunity.” Additionally, the Stoneface climbing area in Southern Illinois has been reclassified by the state as an area off-limits to such activities as climbing and rappelling.

The Memphis Mountaineers met on the second Monday of each month at 6:30pm in the Highland Branch of the Memphis Public Library system. Programs presented during 1992 included slide shows of rock climbing in various areas, alpine mountaineering in Europe, and mountain biking in the Pacific Northwest. Members are notified of club activities through the monthly newsletter—The Memphis Mountain News. Anyone interested in climbing in the Mid-South is encouraged to join our club.
