Hudd readily agrees that Niwa could well be correct. “The Japanese probably have a fair claim to having been the first atop Himlung, even first anywhere on the mountain,” he said. His party unsuccessfully attacked the southern peak by the south ridge, knowing it was called Nemjung on the map. “Previous expeditions’ reports were the only information we had and they indicated that we were where they had been. But there is no reason why the map should be wrong.” His party reached 6400 meters on November 16.
