Bauljuri. On October 1, Lynne Wolfe, co-leader with me, William Porteous, Eric Hagerman, William Boerigter, Gordon Wilson, David Stevens, Chris Hovard and I climbed Bauljuri (5922 meters, 19,429 feet). The peak lies 12 kilometers south of Nanda Devi and is just outside the Nanda Devi Sanctuary. Although not a technical climb, it offers spectacular views of the surrounding peaks and is a good introduction to Himalayan climbing. It is popular with Indian climbers and was climbed just ahead of us by two Indian expeditions. The approach is up the Pindar River with Base Camp at 12,000 feet. We continued up grassy slopes to the Buria Glacier and on to the saddle between Bauljuri and beautiful Panwali Dwar. The summit is due south of the col. Most parties utilize two high camps.
