Arizona Mountaineering Club

Arizona Mountaineering Club. Our club had numerous outings throughout the year to Granite Mountain, Camelback Mountain, Pinnacle Peak, the McDowell Mountains and Little Granite Mountain. Our average climbing rating is 5.7, and the climbs are usually multi-pitched. Out-of-state climbing trips took us to Joshua Tree, the Sierra Nevada, Taquitz Rock and Yosemite in California; Little Cottonwood Canyon in Utah; the Telluride area in Colorado; Smith Rocks in Washington; Red Rock in Nevada; Sandia Crest in New Mexico.

For schools we offered a basic rock-climbing course, lead school, anchors and advanced rope work, and an orienteering school. Our community involvement includes maintaining the trail on Camelback Mountain. We have rebuilt the trail and revegetated the area to help the erosion process.

During the year we were heavily involved in the access to our Arizona mountains. We wrote letters to our senators and met with the supervisors of the projects to secure areas for climbing and other outdoor uses. The areas in question are in the Superstition Mountains (bolting) and the McDowell Mountains in Scottsdale. We have a committee that deals with these access problems.
