Asia, Pakistan, Gasherbrum I Tragedy

Gasherbrum I Tragedy. A Spanish expedition led by Lluís Vandellós had as its other members Josep Grañó, Albert Ibáñez, Carles Requena and Genís Rodríguez. They established Base Camp on August 1 at 5000 meters. They placed Camps I and II at 6000 and 6500 meters on the German route on the northwest ridge. They were ready for a summit attack and Grañó and Ibáñez occupied Camp III on August 18. On August 19, they set out for the summit. Radio communications with the others, who were following a camp below in support, at eight A.M. and at noon were optimistic. At four RM. they announced that they were at 7400 meters, but that they were not able to get to the top and were returning to Camp III. There was never any further contact. It is believed that they must have fallen during the descent.
