Asia, India—Garhwal, Thalay Sagar Attempt

Publication Year: 1991.

Thalay Sagar Attempt. In October, Andrew Wingfield, Charles French, Gordon Scott and I attempted to climb the south face of Thalay Sagar. We placed Advance Base on the Phatung Glacier and climbed a rock buttress to reach Camp I at 5200 meters. Camp II was on a 55° ice slope and Camp III at 6400 meters at the base of the vertical headwall. We used hanging tents, but a bad storm caused snow to cascade down the slope, half burying the tents and making it difficult to melt snow. We reluctantly descended to Camp I. The high point was reached on October 18. There was no time or energy for a second attempt.
