South America, Argentina—Central Andes, Aconcagua National Park

Publication Year: 1991.

Aconcagua National Park. Plaza de Mulas (14,000 feet), the Standard Base Camp for the normal route, now has radio service with three daily contacts with Mendoza and Puente del Inca. Climbers can now radio their needs directly to Puente del Inca. The provincial authorities that manage the park have fixed three standard camps for the normal route: Laguna Horcones, Confluencia (which allows access to the south face) and Plaza de Mulas itself. Those who wish to attempt peaks other than Aconcagua may camp where needed. In mid January 1991, more than 140 volunteer ecologists from different American nations carried out a thorough clean-up of the mountain. The project was sponsored by the Union Panamericana de Asociaciones de Montaña.
