North America, United States, Wyoming—Wind River Range, Palmer Creek Buttress, 1989

Palmer Creek Buttress, 1989. In July 1989, Fred Beckey, Brian Litz and I climbed Palmer Creek Buttress, a west-facing wall of the Palmer Creek branch of New Fork Creek. We scrambled third-class up 1000 feet of scree and loose blocks. The climb then improved in quality. We followed the ridge and encoun tered some 5.7 and one pitch of 5.9, a crack, on four pitches of climbing. We did the final 300 feet of the climb by rappelling into a chimney system to the left of the ridge. We climbed this around several large chockstones for four or five pitches before moderate fifth-class climbing took us to the summit plateau.
