A.A.C., Cascade Section

Publication Year: 1990.

A.A.C., Cascade Section. 1988 and 1989 were very good years for climbers in the Cascade Section. As usual, members participated in expeditions all over the globe, with particularly good results on both years on Kangchenjunga. Carlos Buhler has been very active on 8000-meter peaks, doing Kangchenjunga in 1988 and Cho Oyu in 1989. Lou Whittaker led a successful trip to Kangchenjunga in 1989.

The Section hosted Soviet climbers during the summer of 1988. They climbed in the Cascades and at Squamish and Smith Rock.

Programs hosted by the Section featured Steve Boyer on Annapurna’s south face at the 1988 Section Banquet. Brownie Schoene told about a trip to China to attempt Kang Karpo or Meili in Yünnan. John Hessburg talked at the 1989 Rainier Brewery Night about his trip to Bolivia the previous summer.

Membership remains high and the Section continues its support of access problems. We are still exploring ways to reopen the Peshastin Pinnacles. An agreement was reached with the U.S. Forest Service to make it easier to get permits to climb at Snow Creek Wall. We look forward to the next decade of climbing challenges.
