A.A.C., Blue Ridge Section. Closing out the decade for the Blue Ridge Section, 1989 was another year of increased activity. It is showing reemergence as the mid Atlantic representative of the A.A.C. Meeting more often than before, the Section planned to involve itself in several activities. As the Scots bard said, though, such plans gang aft agley. Poor climbing weather throughout much of the spring and summer prevented some climbing activities.

The biggest event was the sponsorship of Springstone, a climbing competition originally planned as a local event that ultimately drew climbers from around the country. Over 100 climbers competed on a four-sided artificial wall during an all-day event that drew nearly 1000 spectators. Despite many top climbers from elsewhere, the locals managed to garner top prizes in both men’s and women’s categories. The Blue Ridge Section would like to thank the many manufacturers who contributed to the event’s success, as well as the staff and owners of Outdoor Provisionaries and REI, without whose help the event would never have proceeded.

The Section also sponsored two young climbers who participated in the British Youth Climbing Meet, held in Plasy-Brenin, Wales. With the invaluable help of Jim Henriot of the International Climbing Exchange Committee, two D.C. area climbers experienced British rock at its best. Both Colin Seller and Erica Walters met new climbers and exchanged ideas about the sport and laid the foundation for future climbing exchanges.

As the Section moves into the 1990s, membership growth and Section activities continue to be the biggest focus. Starting in the spring, Section member and climbing-book author John Gregory has developed plans to coordinate with the National Forest Service a work project at the new climbers’ campground at Seneca Rocks. Another Springstone may be in the works, as well as plans to coordinate activities with other Club Sections and Committees.
