United States, California—Sierra Nevada, King's Canyon, Buck Rock

Publication Year: 1990.

King’s Canyon, Buck Rock. Old bolts give evidence of people climbing at Buck Rock for years. Below the lookout, there are some short, very overhanging faces. These short routes are both classics. Mowin’ the Yawn (5.10a), a candidate for the steepest 5.10a in the state, ascends the left side of the southeast face (toward the road). Temporary Insanity (5.11+) is the obvious beautiful, very overhanging face directly below the lookout stairs. Access is via the Buck Rock Lookout road and a 200-yard walk on road and trail to the lookout. Both were climbed by Ron Carson, Jon Allen, Brian Hodges and me in November.
