Iowa Mountaineers. The club completed another active year in 1988, with membership remaining at 1100. Over 1700 people participated in one of the many instructional courses, mountaineering camps, or foreign expeditions that were from one to four weeks in length.

In January, Jim Ebert instructed over 150 members in the basic techniques of cross-country skiing at Devils Lake State Park, Wisconsin. In March, Ebert and his staff took a group of 55 hiking and backpacking for a week in the Havasupai area of the Grand Canyon. At the University of Iowa weekend basic rock-climbing courses were offered to 1420 students for one hour of University credit. Additional rock-climbing courses were offered in May, June and August at Devils Lake. Over the Memorial Day weekend a four-day intermediate climbing course was held at Devils Tower, Wyoming. Eighteen members participated, making over 25 ascents of the Tower via five different routes.

In July, John and Jim Ebert led a group of 48 to Tanzania and Kenya. All ascended Mount Kilimanjaro, while 12 members hiked around Mount Kenya and ascended Point Lenana. In August, a group of 48 members visited the Commander Glacier area in the Purcells in British Columbia for a two-week mountaineering camp. It should be noted that the Famham Creek area is no longer accessible by truck or jeep.

On May 1, the club held its 48th annual banquet in Iowa City. Featured was the showing of 10 award-winning climbing and mountaineering films to over 100 in attendance.
