Asia, India—Himachal Pradesh, Gangstang, Lahul

Publication Year: 1989.

Gangstang, Lahul. Our 12-man expedition set up Base Camp on August 1 at 14,000 feet, three kilometers from the head of the Billing Nala. We established Camps I, II and III at 16,500, 17,750 and 18,700 feet on August 4, 5 and 6. Between Camps I and II, we had to bypass crevasses on the Gangstang Glacier by rock climbing on the side of the glacier. On August 7, Chinmoy Bhattacharji, Anjan Ghosh, Indranath Dutta, Amal Nandi and high-altitude porter Alam Chand Thakur reached the summit (6162 meters, 20,216 feet) via steep, crevassed ice slopes.
