Meru North, East Face, New Routes. Three Slovene climbers, Franc Knez, Andreja Hrastnik and her brother Martin, started up the east face of Meru North (6460 meters, 21,162 feet) on August 25. After the second bivouac on the rock wall, they deviated considerably to the right and again bivouacked before reaching the top of the face. (UIAA Grade VII.) From September 6 to 8, Knez and Martin Hrastnik climbed a more direct route to the left of the previous one. (UIAA VIII, A0.) (It is not clear that they reached any of the summits of the group.—Editor.)
