Memphis Mountaineers, Inc. In 1987, the Memphis Mountaineers enjoyed a productive year. The total membership of 55 included 35 regular members residing in the Memphis, Tennessee area, seven honorary members, and 13 associate members scattered throughout the United States. The club sponsored two domestic expeditions involving nine participants at Zion National Park, Utah, and 14 participants at Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado. In addition to ascents of numerous trade routes, new routes were established on the Organ and Deer Ridge Buttress at Zion and Rocky Mountain, respectively, by the expeditions. The Memphis Mountaineers also assisted the National Park Service with two rescues while visiting Rocky Mountain. The club also sponsored 22 shorter outings to Mid-South bluffs, the Carolinas, Texas, and New England. Individual members were active afield, and their successes included a variety of activities from trekking in Napal to paragliding in the French Alps.

The Memphis Mountaineers met monthly on second Mondays at seven P.M. in the Highland Branch of the Memphis Public Library. Informative programs presented at 1987 meetings included a variety of subjects such as glacier travel in the Cascades, oil painting mountain scenes, and a Steve Matous video. Other club functions included social events, programs on mountaineering for other local organizations, and the unanimous formulation of a public statement denouncing the placement of fixed protection on Mid-South cliffs, a very limited resource. Club members also assisted the National Park Service and Memphis State University in the production of two videos demonstrating rock climbing and rescue techniques. Members were notified of club activities through the monthly newsletter Memphis Mountain News.

Club officers included Jim Detterline, President; Robin Daniels, Vice President; Richard Bennett and Cynthia McKinnon, Treasurers; Jay Tomlinson, Secretary; Larry Mallory, Zion expedition leader; and Skip Daniel, Rocky Mountain expedition leader.

The Memphis Mountaineers will celebrate their 10th anniversary in 1988 with numerous activities including a banquet with special guest speaker in September.
