Asia, Nepal, Spanish Dhaulagiri Attempt

Publication Year: 1988.

Spanish Dhaulagiri Attempt. A four-man Spanish team led by Miguel Díaz had hoped to climb the east face of Dhaulagiri to the northeast ridge, but this was too dangerous because of big falling ice slabs and they turned to the northeast ridge. Rafael Hernández and Juan Luis Terradez got to 8000 meters on October 13 but Hernández was hit by a falling block of ice and fell 50 meters. Although his fall was stopped by Terradez and he was not injured, they decided to give up because of this and because two days earlier they had both had frostnip. The other two members were not well and so the climb was over.
