North America, Canada, Arctic, Thorndike Peaks, Ellesmere Island, North West Territories

Thorndike Peaks, Ellesmere Island, North West Territories. This expedition, sponsored by the Explorers Club (Flag #200), operated during May in the Thorndike Peaks, south of the entrance to Makinson Inlet, on the east coast of Ellesmere Island. This was the fourth in a series of our expeditions (1976, 1978, 1980 and 1987) aimed at exploration among the virtually unknown peaks bordering this large fjord, an ideal location for Arctic ski mountaineering. Base Camp was reached via Twin Otter from Resolute Bay on May 12 after several delays due to bad weather. Despite an additional four days lost to the weather, after reaching our 900-foot Base Camp at 77°10'N, 79°35'W, our six-man expedition completed the first circuit of the Thorndike Glacier system. During this 25-mile ski trip, we traversed two valleys from the sea to across the main divide. We also made the first ascents of four peaks in altitude from 2750 to 3700 feet. We returned to Resolute on May 25. We were C. Saville, S. Bull, C. Proctor, L. Scotton, T. Ferguson and I.
