Mount Niflheim, Monashee Range. Mount Niflheim is 1.3 miles west of Mount Thor on the Thor-Odin Creek divide. To our knowledge, the summit had been reached only once, by a traverse from Thor. Gary Speer, Keith Hertel and I flew to the basin west of the peak and then made an exposed new Grade III route on July 24. This was somewhat complex but can best be described as the west face and southwest ridge. The quartzite rock was generally sound, though friable at times, and we sometimes found it difficult to give good protection. Its best feature was a full pitch of continuous 5.7 climbing. We hiked out in a summer downpour. Our tent came afloat when a nearby lake overflowed into a meadow where we were camped.
