Colorado National Monument. Details of routes in Colorado National Monument are available in the new Desert Rock Climbing Guide published in 1987 by the Chockstone Press of Denver. In February, a new route was established on the Oliver Perry-Smith Buttress by Kyle Copeland, Charlie Fowler and Alison Sheets. The 350-foot Windgate Sandstone climb is 50 feet left of the original route (III, 5.10). Protection was with medium to large nuts. From February 6 to 8, Jim Beyer climbed Red Desert on Independence Monument. The difficult, predominantly aid route ascends the fracture line a few yards right (east) of the South Face Direct route and overhangs the bottom of the rock by 25 feet.
