Navajolands. The Navajo still discourage climbing on the reservation. Spider Rock and Shiprock are definitely sacred to the Navajo. The northeast face of Jacob’s Monument was a new route made on April 11 by Kyle Copeland and Sue Kemp (III, 5.10, A2). This spire is a few miles northwest of the Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park. The first ascent of West Elephant’s Foot was made by Kyle Copeland and Alison Sheets on November 28 (I, 5.9, A2). The second ascent was made on the same day by John Middendorf and Allen Humphreys. The Elephant’s Feet formations are located beside Arizona Highway 64 near Red Lake in north central Arizona.
