Asia, Pakistan, Gasherbrum II

Publication Year: 1987.

Gasherbrum II. This mountain is now frequently ascended. Some climbs are noted elsewhere in this journal. See reports by the French and Yugoslavs. Spaniards Juan del Olmo and Roberto Vâsquez reached the summit on July 9. Tragically the expedition leader, Carlos Rábago, died on July 12 at 7000 meters of high-altitude sickness. Pakistanis Mohammad Sher Khan, Mohammad Fakhar-ul-Haq, Abdul Jabbar Bhatti and Mirza Mohammad Atta-ul-Haq got to the top on August 3. This was Sher Khan’s third ascent of Gasherbrum II. On August 16 the summit was reached by Germans Dieter Siegers, Jürgen Altgelt, Karl Zoll, Volker Stallbohm and Swiss Martin Fischer. All climbed the normal route. Unsuccessful expeditions were Italians led by Mario Pietro Rossi, Basques led by Eugenio Gerrotxategui and two German groups led by Georg Welsch and Siegfried Hupfauer.
